The time it takes to see results can vary depending on the individual horse, their current health, and the specific supplement. Consistency is key. We generally recommend allowing several weeks to observe the full benefits.
We do not incorporate salt directly into our Balancerd. This is because of the abrasive nature of chloride, which can significantly accelerate the degradation of vitamins when exposed to light, moisture, and heat. Adding salt would considerably reduce the shelf life of our products. While our packing and sealing processes are carefully controlled, we cannot guarantee storage conditions once products are opened by customers. Our fast turnoaround of our balancers and commitment to long shelf lives ensures that customers receive fresh items, free from degradation.
Our Balancers and Premixes are formulated with specialist guidance from world-leading nutritionists at the Professional Mixing House Company we use.
We recommend that all horses have free access to salt. However, a salt lick alone may not adequately cover maintenance and sweat requirements, as many horses do not utilize them sufficiently.
The amount of salt required varies depending on the horse's sweating rate. For example, a 500 kg horse requires 10g of sodium (equivalent to 25g of salt) per day for maintenance alone, without exercise or sweating in hot conditions.
A reasonable daily amount to cover maintenance requirements is 1-2 tablespoons of salt added to the horse's feed. Hard-working horses will require additional electrolytes. For picky eaters, an alternative option is dissolving the salt in water and spraying it onto hay.
While a hay-only diet can be a necessity for some horses, it requires careful consideration to meet all their nutritional needs. Hay-based diets often lack sufficient protein, essential vitamins, and minerals.
Even though UK forages contain some zinc and copper, these are typically not enough to meet a horse's needs. These trace minerals, although only needed in small quantities, are essential for overall health and soundness.
Salt (sodium chloride), which is depleted through sweat, urine, manure, tears, and other bodily secretions, is often low in forage.
Vitamin E, a vital antioxidant abundant in fresh grass, rapidly diminishes once hay is cut and baled.
Omega-3 fatty acids, also plentiful in fresh grass, are lost in large amounts during the baling and curing processes. Good plant-based alternatives like linseed and chia seeds offer comparable nutritional profiles.
Vitamin C is virtually absent in hay and haylage due to rapid oxidation. While horses on fresh grass receive sufficient Vitamin C, levels decrease significantly during winter or when stabled and fed cured forage.
Fat-soluble Vitamins A and D decline with prolonged forage storage, making supplementation particularly important for horses without access to green pasture and when fed more mature forage.
Additional considerations for a hay-only diet include protein availability and quality. A key factor is the hay's maturity at harvest; more mature hay generally has lower protein levels compared to hay harvested at an earlier stage of growth. As plants mature, their structural carbohydrate levels increase while protein levels tend to decrease. If your horse is experiencing issues such as poor hoof, skin, or coat quality, poor topline development, or slow wound healing, they may require a higher-quality protein source than your current hay provides.
To provide appropriate nutrition on a hay-only diet, we recommend supplementing with a balanced vitamin, mineral, and amino acid supplement designed for the type of forage being fed, such as our Hay Boost balancer, with an additional source of protein such as our Pea protein powder if required.
Horses naturally consume ample Omega-3 when grazing on fresh, green grass during spring and summer. However, once the grass growth slows in autumn and winter, and horses transition to preserved forages like hay or haylage, their Omega-3 levels significantly decrease. Dietary Omega-3 is crucial for horses, as EFAs cannot be produced naturally by the horse's body. Supplementation is a key factor when grass is limited to maintain a balanced and healthy diet for your horse.
